Poor Kid

Why when kids are just trying to have some fun, something like this has to happen?... Ouch!!

Rachel was pulling him on a blanket across the wood floor and somehow his face ended up smacking the corner of the couch. He was relatively calm about the whole thing until Rachel told him he was bleeding. BUT I was able to get him calmed down quickly and we averted a major emotional disaster. I wonder what it will look like in the morning...

Gingerbread Houses

Every year we get together with all the cousins at Grandpa and Grandma Swensen's house to make gingerbread houses. The first couple years, we made them from scratch, but as our lives have gotten busier we have all opted for store bought kits. They work, so why not?! Simplify... that's what we're told, right???

Here's the meltdown....
Aak, he's out of little, teeny, tiny round candies for his gingerbread tree. Call in the Marines!

Phew! Thanks Grandma for finding more to finish it. The world didn't end after all!! [But it ALMOST did! And he really likes to cheese at the camera if you haven't noticed.]

The finished product.... for about 2 minutes anyway. We're down 3 trees and the gumballs on the roof. I don't think it will last through the week!

Gingerbread track housing!

We also like to get a group picture of the cousins when we're done. (We're minus 5 that couldn't make it... we missed you, Harwards!) So- with the commotion of gathering all the kids together and actually getting them to stand still for two seconds, no one noticed a little visitor up on the roof. We've seen him once or twice before, usually only in pictures. I wonder if Santa likes it when his elves get caught??? I guess we now know how he knows if we are naughty or nice! He's making his list and checking it twice!!

Perler Beads + Haley = bad idea

But wait-- don't forget step 5... After you let your creation cool, leave it on the floor for your baby sister to bite.

The result...

a bead wedged around her tooth! Lovely. Just lovely.

Aren't Brothers the BEST

When you have a brother who is very independent (and will go ahead and cut his own fruit-- with a butter knife, I might add) you're bound to run across the left overs that mom has no idea even exist...

That's one proud girl!

Christmas Greetings

I'm getting my Christmas stuff out today and am trying to get into the spirit of it all. I don't know why, but I am in a vintage mood. I hope Thanksgiving was a great day for everyone. I thought I was going to be stuck at home with a sick child, but ended up being able to attend the dinner as planned. I had a very enjoyable day and am looking forward to a wonderful Christmas season.

These greeting cards put me back to my childhood even though they are from WAY before my time, there's just something about them that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy... Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Thoughts

I have been feeling very blessed the past few weeks and am so thankful for so many things. The bigger obvious ones are my family, my faith, this country, my freedom, my friends, but beyond those there are the little things that I take for granted that I am soooo grateful for.... running water, hot water, washing machines, a yard, cell phones, medicine, doctors, cars, lower gas prices, computers, the internet, DVR, cozy beds, electricity, heat, a semi-clean house, disinfectant cleaners, stores, etc. etc.. I know those are just conveniences that make life easier and better which is why I am thankful for them, but the truth is the things that really keep me going are the daily giggles, sincere notes, hugs, kisses, and unconditional love I recieve from my four little ones [and Nate, minus the notes and giggling.... he doesn't do that daily].

Happy Thanksgiving!

Random Haps

Here are some random happenings at our home this fall....

Rachel VOLUNTEERED to help fold laundry-- Hallelujah! It's a miracle! It made me so happy because she genuinely just wanted to help. Usually there's begging and pleading for prizes or money if I ask my kids to help with chores. It actually even made me tear up a bit. Nate was out-of-town and I needed a little boost. Thanks Rach!

Homemade caramel apples-- Yum! I attempted the "Apple Pie" from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. It looked pathetic, but tasted good. Nate even said it was better than theirs.... awe Nate, you're so sweet- full of it, but sweet!

Kaden's mysterious black eye.... orgin- unknown. I thought it was marker at first, but when it turned from red to purple the next morning I figured I wouldn't keep trying to wash it off!

Last but not least-- Pop Stars. Rachel got everyone dressed up and they were pretending to be "pop stars" with mine and Nate's clothes. They sure make me smile!!

Rachel's 7th Birthday

Rachel was so excited to open her presents when she woke up. I teased her and told her she couldn't open them until it was 8:31 AM because that's what time she was born. She didn't think waiting 45 more minutes was a good idea. I don't blame her. As you can see from the pictures, she was VERY happy to get an American Girl doll. She wanted the ice skating doll, Mia, but wouldn't you know it, the skates come separately... At least it made for two gifts to open instead of just one!

After school we had a "mini" birthday party. I let her invite 3 friends over to do a little frame painting project. I think she had a lot of fun. She has some great friends.

We had cake and ice cream with both sets of grandparents. She sure loves each of them and I know enjoyed having them over. I always forget to get pictures of her with them, though. I frustrate myself!

Isn't she just the cutest little 7 year old?!

We love you, Rachel! We hope you had a very happy birthday!

Dancing Queen

Rachel did such a great job dancing at the Poinsettia Festival. She got a little nervous waiting for her turn, but didn't let it get her down.

Nate's Birthday Celebrations

The kids were so excited to give their dad presents! They hovered over him as he read their cards and opened their gifts.

Blowing out the candles...
Where are the 30 candles you ask??? In the cupboard. I wasn't about to put 5 candles on each cupcake!!

Speaking of cupcakes-- I made ice cream cupcakes that were pretty good if I do say so myself!

They were a hit!

We hope you had a happy birthday, Nate! [Even if we had to celebrate it a day late!]

Happy 30th Birthday

Today is Nate's 30th birthday! He is actually in Washington D.C. so we'll celebrate it with him tomorrow, but I just wanted to say Happy Birthday to my best friend! I love you and miss you soooo much. You are such a blessing in my life. Thank you for being you!

More Missing Teeth...

This time it was Kaden's turn. He lost his very first tooth last week. I kept forgetting to take a picture so I tried while he was sleeping.....

He tried to open his eyes and smile, but he wasn't really awake. So I had to pull his lip down and try to snap a picture. [How do you like the dried up tooth paste on his upper lip?!]

The next morning..... "Hey Kaden! Show me your missing tooth. WHOA! Thanks bud!"

BREAKING NEWS: Boy Saves Family From Starvation!!

Kaden- "Mom, you can have some of my money."
Mom- "Why? Is it so I can buy you more Christmas presents?" [I've had to tell him that he can't have EVERYTHING he sees so I figured he just wanted more, more, more!!]
Kaden- "No."
Mom- "Why do you want to give me your money?"
Kaden- "So you can buy more food or something. I have a lot of big ones and some small ones too." [talking about quarters, nickles, pennies & dimes]

Oh my goodness!! How sweet is that? I'm not sure what spurred him to want to help contribute to our grocery fund... we have plenty of food in case you are worried... but you never know with this economy!! I told him he could keep his money, but thanked him for offering it. He has always been a very kind and thoughtful boy and I feel so blessed to be his mom.

And Again...

This is how I found Haley after her nap today.... It just made me laugh because I wasn't expecting to find her shirtless again. It was actually the 2nd time today I found her that way. I've never had a child who liked to undress so bear with me as I find it funny and worth note. She woke up happy, but when she saw I had the camera and I wasn't picking her up right away she got ticked off!

Seriously!

It's just ANOTHER mess! This one happened with address/deposit stamps in our office on Sunday while Nate was at meetings and I was... uh-uh... ummmm... well I'm not sure what I was doing, but I do know I WAS NOT taking a nap! Rachel informed me of the boys doing something "very naughty". My first tip off should have been the silence that engulfed the house. You know what I'm talking about.... if it's too quiet, watch out!! It washed off the floor and cabinets just fine... their skin-- not so much!!

Uh-Oh!

I heard Haley say, "Uh-Oh!" so naturally I track her down to see what has happened.

I found her shirtless and proud!!

So- I put it back on her, but she was pretty determined to get it off again....
But couldn't!

Next thing I know she's mad as heck trying to get out of the house and I'm just laughing because she REALLY is mad that her shirt won't come off! I love the entertainment I enjoy from my children!!

Meee-ow

This little kitty joined us for dinner tonight. We were very surprised! We didn't even know we owned one, but she is the cutest little feline we've ever seen!!

And here's the culprit!! Rachel was rather proud of her "face painting" skills. She got a little time-out, but how could Nate and I really be mad about that??? It's hard to try to look disappointed when we're laughing! [In case you are worried- it washed off just fine.]

Another One of Tye's Awesome Comments

Tye: "My brain is in my tummy."
Mom: "What?" [very confused] "Your brain is in your tummy??"
Tye: "Yes. I have a brain freeze in my tummy."

I am still trying to figure out what the heck he was talking about. He's a weirdo, but a super cute one!

A DAY FROM HELL... (sorry, but it's true!)

Saturday, November 1st. It was a beautiful day. Pleasant weather. Perfect for roofing a garage addition.
But then the phone rings and it's my father-in-law. (That's not the bad part... hee, hee, hee!! (Love you Loren)) He's calling to tell me that everyone is at our niece's baptism and we aren't there. They've already done all the talks and are just waiting for their turn to go to the font. Oh crap! Nate's in the middle of roofing the garage and can't leave. So I hurry and get the kids in their Sunday clothes. I'm trying to get their shoes on and I get another call saying they were heading back to the font. There's no way we'll make it so I tell him to tell my niece and her parents I'm sorry we forgot about it and missed the whole thing.

We go about our day doing the usual Saturday things and Nate keeps working on the garage. We were invited to dinner at our friends house in Provo so we head out around 6:00ish. On our way Haley has a coughing attack and throws up all over herself, carseat, etc.. We decide to stop by my parents house to clean her up and the car since we go right by it on our way to our friends house. The only clothes I could find that fit her were some black sweat pants and a green camo sweatshirt. She looked awesome!

We eat dinner and have dessert, but I realize Haley is feverish and rubbing her ears. (I know deep down inside we should've stayed home... actually I didn't have to dig very deep!) We decide to take her to the after hours clinic which is in North Orem. We gather up all the kids and head out. Nate drops me, Haley and Rachel off at the doctors office and he and the boys go to the store to get some pork ribs for Sunday's dinner with Nate's family that we are hosting. It takes close to an hour at the doctor.

Haley's ears are infected and she needs a prescription filled. By this time all the pharmacies are closed except the few that are open 24 hours. So we have to go back down to Provo and we wait a good 30 minutes for her prescription to be filled. Kaden, Tye and Haley have all fallen asleep in the car by now, but when Rachel and I get in the car it wakes Tye up. He was the devil!! Screaming, crying, coughing. Oh please, why couldn't we just teleport home?!! After driving 20 minutes we get about 3 blocks from home and he starts coughing and GAGGING.... No, not the gag reflex again! Yep, he started throwing up so I grab a diaper out of the diaper bag and try to catch the rest of it. Mmmmm, theres' nothing quite like the smell of freshly eaten hot dogs!!

Finally we were home! I get some ibuprofen for Haley's fever and for Rachel because her leg was aching, but failed to get the lid screwed on and just set it on top. I go to give Tye a bath and Nate knocks the medicine over and it spills. But to top that, he was getting the groceries out of the car and the only thing that falls out are the eggs! He salvaged 4 of 18. At some point I glance at the ribs he bought and realize he paid nearly double what he should have. Apparently they weren't on sale at every Macey's and he forgot the dog food!

Seriously, it was the crappiest day. I'll never forget it! I WANT to forget it, but I'm pretty sure it's ingrained in my memory forever!!!

Halloween

COSTUME PARADE

Rachel and Kaden showed off their costumes for all the parents to see. It was fun to watch them walk by.

Rachel smiled and looked at the camera. "Hi, Rachel!", I say. "Hi, Mom!", she utters back.

"Hello, Kaden! Hello! Helllllloooooo!" He wouldn't even look at me. I think he gave his Dad 5 or something then went on his merry old way. I did not exist to him! He must have been concentrating on the line of kids and where he was going next. Yep, that's what I'll tell myself so my feeling won't be hurt!

Poor girl! It was so loud in the gym, but sleep over took her!

AT GRANDPA & NANA BISHOP'S HOUSE
Here are our little stinkers! Rachel was a witch. Kaden was Optimus Prime from Transformers. Tye was a Hot Wheels race car driver. Haley was a lady bug and wasn't very interested in gettting her picture taken!

We didn't do anything fancy this year. We just used whatever came with the costume. I'm determined to be more creative next year, though.

TRUNK-OR-TREAT
Our ward does a trunk-or-treat every year on Halloween day. I have mixed feeling about it, but our kids seem to like it and didn't care that we didn't do any traditional trick-or-treating this year. Our neighbor is in the top right picture. He's very creative every year and didn't disappoint! Our bishop's "trunk" was the llama... it wouldn't look at me, though! Maybe if I would have dressed up it wouldn't be so afraid of me!!! According to Nate I don't need to "dress up" to be a witch!! Ha, ha! No one's ever heard that joke before! Sorry... moving on....

Our fun filled day ended with Tye grabbing his stomach and saying, "My tummy hurts!" I hurried and emptied the treat bowl and handed it to Nate. Within seconds Tye was throwing up. Apparently, Nate wasn't ready for it because the first heave landed on the carpet. I didn't think he had eaten that much candy, but I'm guessing he sneaked more than I thought. He was fine after that. Nate didn't think it was necessary to take a picture. I assured him it was!!

Hope you all had a fun Halloween!
